Headwinds, hard climbs, and a determined solo effort from the back row.
On Saturday, May 3rd, the state championships for the regions of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Saarland, and Rhineland-Palatinate were held in Berghülen, nestled in the rolling hills of the Swabian Alb. The race covered a challenging 120 km over a 6 km undulating circuit, featuring constant short climbs and open sections exposed to the wind.
Leo Ebner faced an unfortunate setback before the race even began — he was drawn to start in the last row. With a starting field of over 100 riders, this made for a difficult and energy-consuming beginning. The peloton stretched out quickly, and strong crosswinds began to take their toll, splitting the field early and forcing many riders to drop. After the first hour of racing, Leo found himself in a chase group just behind the main bunch. Through a determined effort and strong teamwork within the group, they managed to reconnect with the main field. However, shortly afterward, another split occurred — and once again, Leo was caught on the wrong side of it.
Despite these repeated setbacks and the demanding conditions, Leo showed great resilience and endurance. After nearly three hours of racing, he crossed the line in a respectable 14th place in the Baden-Württemberg classification.
